A clear criterion - the invention of the potter's wheel and pottery. This was well before the invention of bronze and. tools made of it, not to mention writing. Writing was the touchstone of civilization.
As soon as pottery was invented, the Stone Age was over... but the Bronze Age had not yet begun.
