The horses were white because they were to match the solemnity and peculiarity of the event. White was the first of the divine colors and was identified with light. It was also considered the color of nobility and grandeur. The combination of white and purple was seen as a symbol of importance, of aristocratic origin. And every victor had to return home triumphantly, almost as an emperor.
