Why are you sometimes asked to close all the portholes in an airplane during the flight?
Answer from: Igor:

Not during the flight, but during takeoff and landing, when there is a high probability of an emergency situation. If the passengers' eyes get used to the dim light when the flaps are closed, it helps during evacuation.
